Styling Your Shape

We all come in different shapes and sizes. Some of us are pear shaped, others are straight, apples, and hourglasses. Whether your petite, average, or plus-sized, dress your shape in clothes that enhance it instead of hide it. Too many college-age women worry endlessly about their body-type and diet and exercise constantly in hopes of changing it. Unfortunately, you can't change your shape no matter how much weight you lose, but you can dress your shape in ways that flatter it better than others. On this page you will find styles of clothing that flatter common shapes found amongst women.

•Pear: You're pear-shaped if your chest is much narrower than your hips. The pear-shaped body type is thought to be the most common body type amongst women. Pear-shaped women are bottom-heavy, so when dressing a pear shaped figure balance is key. One can attain the illusion of balance by wearing tops with puffy sleeves, a bold print or pattern, or a current trend like ruffles. Tops like these will make your shoulders and chest appear broader, which will in turn make your hips and appear slimmer. Choose pants with a flared or wide leg in a dark wash because they will make your bottom half appear much narrower. When looking for dresses, stick to ones with A-Line skirts or empire waists.

•Apple: Women with apple shapes have broad shoulders, a full bust, an undefined waist, and narrow hips. When choosing tops, women with apple shapes should opt for ones that have a V-neckline because it narrows the shoulders a plays up your full bust. Shirts with empire waists are also good choices because they do not enhance your already wide waist. Apples look great in jackets and blazers, both of which have a slimming effect on the apple figure. When wearing skirts and dresses, apples should stick to A-lines because they create a waist. Bootcut pants elongate and slim your frame. Apples should stay away from puffy sleeves and loose-fitting tops.

•Straight/boy-shaped: Those with straight frames tend to have an overall balanced figure and look athletic. Scoopneck or V-neck shirts look best. Try to wear tops with feminine details like ruffles or beading. Dresses with drop waists flatter a straight figure and give the illusion of curves. Those with this shape should wear jeans with large pockets to give the bottom half some shape.

•Hourglass: Hourglass figures have chest and hip measurements that are almost equal with narrow waists. Those with hourglass shapes should wear V-necks to elongate the torso and pair them with a belt at the waist to accenuate the narrow waistline. Tailored jeans with a little flare look best on women with hourglass figures. Dresses that are tight and gathered at the waist work well with the hourglass shape. Do not wear ruffled tops or dresses.
